2020's Horror so far

I honestly feel that the 2020's has been a gift to us fans of Horror movies. From 2020 to present we have been given some of the best goddamn horror films I've seen in the last few decades. We could be experiencing the a new Golden Age of horror and not even know it. I truly believe when the 2020's are done and in the history books that the horror movies from this decade will be in serious discussions along with the 1980's and 1970's.

The reason I feel this way is how we have (Finally) gotten back to the dark/gritty and serious horror style that I have longed to see return for so many years. That is not saying that the most recent decades did not have any films with that style but they weren't prominent as they are now. Perhaps it was the pandemic and everything that has happened since that prompted the return to that style, idk, and don't care. All I can say is I'm loving it!

My Tops so Far:

Nosferatu
The Invisible Man
X
Barbarian
The First Omen
The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Longlegs
The Substance
Malignant
Sinners
Hellraiser (2022)
Evil Dead Rise
Smile
Hereditary
Exorcist: Believer
Black Phone

I know the bulk of the franchise tended to remove itself from horror, Godzilla Minus One deserves mention. Two years on and I think it might be the finest big monster movie made.

It has its dumb moments (bitch please, like certain other beloved entries in the franchise don't? I'm lookin' at you pt 4!), Halloween Kills really serves that brutal slasher itch well.

I'm also a big fan of Terrifier 2 and 3, but especially 2. I really appreciate its indie labor-of-love dirty ultraviolence, but the incredible step up with character progression (Sienna is my top 2020's Scream Queen right now) and weight from a fun-but-pretty-empty first film.

Looking forward to Egger's Werewulf.

I tried watching Godzilla Minus One but couldn't get into it. Besides that is Sci-Fi and not Horror ;)

I forgot Halloween Kills, great slasher flick. Though I did enjoy Halloween (2018) more. Easily the second best to the original.

As you know I am no fan of the Terrifier films. I have tried more than once but just can't get into them for whatever reason.
Wolfman is another I forgot to mention. It was better than I anticipated it would be. Werewulf should be good!

I don't see how it's not horror, it's always been a big monster HORRORFYING an entire nation lol. Alien has Sci Fi roots too, but has never been kicked out of horror. Used to be called Atomic Horror.

Halloween 2018 is great...but not 2020's so I didn't mention it.

I was surprised Wolfman didn't suck, given how everyone hated it upon release, but it's still pretty mediocre overall. Which was disappointing coming from the same guy who gave use The Invisible Man.

I had to think of this one for a bit but, I have to agree with Lazerus.
I don't see any of the Godzilla movies as horror. Majority of those films are silly and over the top.

If Godzilla is horror then what about King Kong? or Cloverfield? and all the other giant monster movies?

Just to make it clear I was only talking about Godzilla: Minus One.

The original Gorjira (1955) could easily qualify as horror. D's argument for atomic horror is also valid.

Comparing King Kong and Cloverfield to the 1955 Gorjira is like apples and oranges lol

It was weaker than Invisible Man but still not as bad as some on the internet claimed.

I'm still waiting on a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake.

Yes, the bulk of the franchise isn't, as I started off mentioning, those installments are silly superhero pulp. But I was talking about the ones that serioysly go right back to the atomic horror roots, which I believe have only 4 entries (6 if you count american cuts of the same film separately l). I see them as no different than The Blob or The Fly, or Them!

King Kong was always played more to fantasy/adventure spectacle, in all versions.

The Blob is a great reference to the giant monster horror theme.
The Fly is great body horror, especially the remake.
