Considering the story doesn't happen without Christmas involved, yes it's a Christmas movie. I'm positive Culkin was trolling when he claimed it wasn't because you can shift Home Alone to summer vacation and get the same movie. No one flies cross-country for St. Patty's Day to visit an estranged wife at her company's St. Patty's Day party. Plus music motif's have Christmas references, key dialogue points have Christmas references. Family gets back together in the end, McClane writes his own naughty list on his arm, plenty of pitter patter on the rooftop. No one sings Christmas Songs in it like a stereotypical Hallmark movie? Too bad, Officer Powell is literally singing (to himself) "Let It Snow!" :p

Claiming taking Christmas references out of the script keeps it from being a Christmas movie is a shallow theory, because Die Hard becomes a different movie when you have to modify it so heavily to remove it. It's not like First Blood where there's a leftover Christmas tree in the background of the police station - it has nothing to do with what's going on in the story, no references, nada. Hell, minimal changes can be done to Lethal Weapon and it's basically the same movie (the biggest change in a scene is probably Rigg's drug bust at the Christmas Tree farm, a filler character scene), but with Die Hard? No, massive overhaul.

There are those that know Die Hard is a Christmas movie, and those that are wrong.

I agree it's a Christmas movie as you stated there are numerous references to the holiday in the film. Was Culkin the one who started this debate? I had a former co-worker start this debate around the holidays. I don't understand anyone who considers this film a non-Christmas movie.

He didn't start the debate, he just recently threw another log onto the fire lol. He did it with a smirk, leading me to believe he was trolling everyone. Sorta like how Bruce at his roast claims it's not a Christmas movie, it's a Bruce Willis movie lol. It's for the lulz.
